So today was the day for exploring Beijing, starting with Tiananmen Square which is enormous. It’s the size of Belgium or something like that. It’s also chock full of Chinese from all over the country paying their respects at the tomb of Chairman Mao. For many Chinese, this may be the first time they have seen Westerners, so they tend to stare and sneak pictures of us – we have some sort of novelty value… part of the holiday slideshow when they get home… “Look what we saw!”

This giant flower bowl celebrates 69 years of China as a nation.

We stopped for a group photo before continuing on to the Forbidden City. The reason some of them are pointing is that I was about to be run over by a rubbish collection truck.
