VJ Day

75 Years ago, it was Victory over Japan day – VJ Day. It matters not simply as a just and deserved victory over the cruel regime of Japanese Militarism, but also as the conclusion of the entire 7 year period of the Second World War.

It’s tempting to describe in detail the epic battles of the campaign, but I won’t. If you don’t already know about them, then you should feel slightly ashamed and read up a little more.

Let us just be thankful for the contributions made to our present day liberty by the extraordinary valour of that generation – British, Commonwealth and American men (and women) who fought in extremes of heat and humidity for something that they believed to be fundamentally ‘right’. What they would make of our COVID timidity can only be conjectured. Things are different now.
