Big day today! We took an SBB service train from Vevey to Zermatt. From Zermatt we rode the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway up to the top of the Gornergrat from where there are simply stunning views. The Gornergrat railway is situated at an altitude of 3,089 m (10,135 ft), which makes the Gornergrat Railway the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau, and the highest open-air railway of the continent. The line opened in 1898, and was the first electric rack railway to be built in Switzerland. These brave little chocolate coloured trains climb ever upwards like mountain goats.

The weather today was extraordinary and we were treated to extensive views of the surrounding area. You can see as far as Italy.

Later on, we descended and continued our rail journey, onwards to the town of Brigg from where I am writing this post. as we waited to board the train at Zermatt we saw these rather splendid horses, waiting to take arriving guests to their various hotels.

Beautiful scenery! Thanks for sharing.
